I love sharing stories like Rebeka’s in Her Own Two Feet. That’s what this blog is all about. My stories. Other people’s stories. Writing stories for children. Once upon a time I told the story of our family traveling around the world for nine and a half months. You can find those here at Faces in the Street.

Highly recommend @covrt.ney if you need pics of an Highly recommend @covrt.ney if you need pics of any sort, she’s brilliant and a wonderful human being and she makes me laugh (a great trait for someone taking your picture!).
I noticed something new when giving a presentation I noticed something new when giving a presentation I’ve given dozens of times before. I have a slide that shows a picture of our family taken the night before the first time Rebeka went back to Rwanda, and a picture of us right before the second time she went back to Rwanda.

I noticed Rebeka’s t-shirts. The first time her shirt said “We all have a story to tell.” This was 4 years before we decided to write Her Own Two Feet. In the second picture, her shirt has a butterfly on it. Those who have read our book know that “strong like a butterfly” is a big theme!

She went from “we all have a story to tell” to writing a book about how she was “strong like a butterfly” that has inspired many others to be strong as well. In fact, a school visit last week happened because we got a letter from a student in that class. She shared that Rebeka’s strength was inspiring, and when she finished her book she was going to leave it at school so her classmates could read it. I wrote back, and the student’s mom ended up reaching out to the teacher and setting up an author visit! Grateful for it all, and loved seeing this slide with new eyes.
I love how a student’s question will show me som I love how a student’s question will show me something new about our book. That happened last week during a school visit when I realized how often the answer is “both” when asked about Rebeka’s feelings.

Like was she nervous or excited about surgery? She was both. (I had fun picking pictures for that slide!) Was she happy or sad to go back to Rwanda? Both. It was both. I also love giving kids agency to feel all the feelings.

Said goodbye today
to a friend who passed away
she said goodbye pain.

It is well my soul,
joined the crowd to sing my hope
‘till we meet again.
